I have a lot to say about design practice and philosophy. It’s occupied a bulk share of my brain space for over half my life. But in this case, I’ll let some of the amazing people I’ve been blessed to worked with over the years do the talking for me…
David Warner | Global Creative Director — Branding, Marketing, Experience Design
Ben and I worked together over the span of a year. In that time he proved to be a talented and versatile creative leader. Always mindful of the collective effort that drives innovation, Ben is fantastic at fostering a collaborative and creative culture while balancing human-centered strategies and commercial dynamics. Ben is a tireless champion of well crafted ideas and delivering smart product and service solutions.
Ricky Hennesy | AI & Data Science @ Google Cloud
Ben is an incredibly talented and thoughtful design leader. We worked together at Fjord and Accenture for three years, tackling some of our clients' toughest challenges. While at Fjord, Ben led some of the largest, most complex projects and has made it look easy. His attention to detail and great leadership skills kept teams motivated and delivering top notch work. As a designer or a leader, Ben would be a great addition to any team.
Tim Irvine | Product and Experience Design Leader, Accenture Song
To say that Ben Tautfest has a strong shoe game is an understatement, but that's not why we're here. I was fortunate to work with Ben closely over multiple years following the acquisition of the Austin studio into Fjord. I always found Ben to be a passionate crusader for quality of craft and attention to details. As Charles Eames said, "The details aren't the details. They make the design." Ben gets that and champions it at every turn. As a complement to that insistence on quality, Ben also regularly demonstrated a desire to learn about the business impact of our decisions - something that made him a more potent design director.
Greg Small | Director, Marketing Advisory at KPMG
I have had the pleasure of working wit Ben multiple times during my tenure at Accenture and he is my go-to Design Director for net new product creation endeavors across multiple industries. Ben is creative and brings the imaginative leadership capabilities that allow a design team to delight our clients, while also providing a systems thinking discipline that facilitates turning the “art of the possible” into a solid deliverable product. The resulting design libraries and product feature catalogs also allow us to deliver quality and then transition the product and the future design/development capability to the client. I highly recommend Ben and greatly enjoy leading teams with him.
Feedback received from an anonymous survey of team members at the Fjord, Austin studio. The prompt for this particular set of feedback was “what do I do well?”

Caring enough to ask for straight up feedback.
Protecting the craft and what you believe in
Upholding the craft yourself and exemplifying the passion and joy of doing good work
Representing the process and the product to a project's stakeholders
Emotional awareness of how things are going on your teams. You celebrate what goes well and actively try to course correct when necessary.

You push us to deliver excellence. I admire your attention to craft and your passion for it. It's not just about getting something done but getting something done right. You also bring a pop of energy to monotonous meetings and the office

Being a supportive leader; going to bat for the team when needed; keeping the mood light; getting excited and being positive about our work; being engaged with the team personally; listening to us; thanks for all you do!

This person chose not to be anonymous…
You pushed the team to do better and better work, to clean up our craft
You pushed the team to share the role of giving feedback, I think that this was very positive for the team and grew this experience for the team.
You granted the team space to explore and grow as designers in leadership and our disciplines.
You consistently gave great, easily understandable presentation feedback to me and others on the team.
You allowed us to fail in presentations and really just gave us the room to learn about presenting. Super appreciate this.
I feel like you started giving more positive and negative team feedback as the project continued. I liked this quite a bit, I think I responded really well and I believe the team was energized from this.
I always appreciate our conversations, I feel like I always come away with something important and meaningful. If I haven't reminded you, you were the person that told me to be more "goal-oriented" about a year and half ago ... this has been a platinum piece of advice for me as I see more and more ways to apply this concept.

Appreciate the not-taking-yourself-too-seriously, easy-to-talk to attitude that you bring. It makes work more fun and less stressful.
Your feedback is on point, especially from a craft perspective. I find it most helpful when you ask prompting questions to challenge the designer(s) to consider/defend their decisions.

Bringing creative culture and craft to business and strategic consulting.
Fostering a culture of exploration, creativity and critique in project teams and across the studio.
Looking after, developing and mentoring team members - as well as giving feedback and direction.

You are a great sounding board. I know you were stretched thin on projects, but you always made time to be present and hear out our ideas. You steered the team in the right direction and ensured we staved on-target.
You were consistently one of our client's favorite voices in the room as you brought a refreshing perspective and obvious design expertise.
I also appreciated that you gave me a chance. We have very different perspectives and backgrounds and at the beginning of our project, I felt like an outsider. We didn't always see eye to eye on things but I really appreciated that you always heard me out and respected where I was coming from regardless.
Hope we get to work together again!
